SINGITA PAMUSHANA (ZIMBABWE) WINS MAJOR INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION AWARD

Singita Pamushana in Zimbabwe’s Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve has been named Global Winner in the Conservation category of the 6th annual World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, announced on the 17th of May in Las Vegas, during the WTTC’s annual Global Travel & Tourism Summit.

One of Singita Game Reserve’s nine low-impact/high-end game lodges in Southern and East Africa, Singita Pamushana is referred to often as ‘one of Southern Africa’s best kept secrets’. It was selected as winner in this prestigious global competition from amongst the two other outstanding finalists in the Conservation category: Frégate Island Private in the Seychelles; and The Jane Goodall Institute/Budongo Ecotourism Development Project in Uganda.

Singita Pamushana was established with the core purpose of making a meaningful contribution towards the cost of conserving the extraordinary 130 000 acres (40,000 ha) Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in south-eastern Zimbabwe. The Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve is owned by the Malilangwe Trust, and relies on donor funding, as well as the proceeds of tourism to accomplish its goals in conservation and community outreach programmes. It is said that this confident venture into a world-class tourism product for Zimbabwe impressed the panel of international judges as a paragon of a private tourism practice that uniquely subsists solely to generate income via high value tourism, to make a major contribution to the national goal of rehabilitating the country’s wildlife and tourism industries.

The natural habitat in the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve has been rehabilitated to its original state, and today Singita Pamushana has the finest quality wildlife in Zimbabwe. It also boasts some of the greatest varieties of mammal and bird species on the African continent, due to the 38 different habitat and ecological zones found on the property. Seventeen previously plentiful resident wildlife species have been reintroduced successfully, totalling more than 3000 animals. These range from endangered Black Rhino to Roan Antelope and Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest. Under Singita Pamushana’s sensitive management the wildlife populations have shown exhilarating growth after the carefully managed reintroduction.

With a strong research team at its base – including scholarships given to Zimbabwean students to further the planet’s understanding of key species – a breeding centre has been established on site at Singita Pamushana to breed animals such as Nyala, Kudu, Roan and Sable for introduction into the wild.

Singita Pamushana is also involved in supporting various projects allied to its conservation efforts. These include donor funding for the Frankfurt Zoological Society’s partnership with Zimbabwe’s Parks and Wildlife Management to rehabilitate the neighbouring Gonarezhou National Park, and the injection of funding to enable the widespread provision of rabies vaccines to the Government veterinary department. Operating effectively to ensure poaching is minimal, the Singita Pamushana Game Scout team plays an important role in facilitating Zimbabwe’s Rhino anti-poaching initiatives through the use of its helicopter and other strategic support.

Says Luke Bailes, CEO of Singita Game Reserves: ‘It is a great honour to be recognized by an organisation such as the World Travel & Tourism Council for our approach to conservation, and for the conservation-related programmes that are in place at Singita Pamushana. These create the context within which our guests can experience African wildlife at its very best. Singita Pamushana exemplifies our approach to sustainable tourism and is a paradigm of how we can contribute meaningfully to conserving vast ecological zones, in so doing preserving these areas and their wildlife for future generations.’

The diverse wildlife at Singita Pamushana includes both the ‘Big 5’ (Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Elephant and Buffalo), and the ‘Little-6’ antelope (Klipspringer, Oribi, Grey Duiker, Steenbok, Grysbok and Suni), as well as other endangered species such as the ‘Painted Hunting dogs’. Over 400 bird species are to be found on the property, representing 4% of all the species of birds in the world, including 14 types of eagle and nine different owl species. Singita Pamushana is also known for its dramatic sandstone outcrops, Mopane Forests and majestic baobab trees.

Taking conservation beyond nature towards the preservation of local culture, Singita Pamushana is custodian of over 80 well-preserved, 2 000-year old rock art sites – a priceless heritage found on site in the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve.

Major community projects here include Singita Pamushana’s critical feeding scheme for some 22 000 pre-school children living within the vicinity of the reserve; the employment of 250 mostly local Zimbabweans; and the provision of drinkable, clean borehole water to approximately 10 000 people in the area.

MORE ABOUT SINGITA PAMUSHANA
Perched high against the sandstone cliffs within the pristine 130 000 acres (40,000 ha) of the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in south-eastern Zimbabwe, Singita Pamushana is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Its bold design incorporates the majestic scale of the terrain, while six luxurious suites and a magnificent 5-bedroomed villa vividly reflect the tribal history of the local Shangaan people. The main lodge boasts three lounges and an impressively stocked wine cellar, with lodge facilities including a bush spa and gym, two heated swimming pools and a Jacuzzi. STEENBERG’S BISTRO SIXTEEN82 SERVES UP CULINARY DELIGHTS AT THE ‘GOOD FOOD & WINE SHOW’ (26 to 29 May 2011)

May 16, 2011

STEENBERG’S BISTRO SIXTEEN82 SERVES UP CULINARY DELIGHTS AT THE ‘GOOD FOOD & WINE SHOW’ (26 to 29 May 2011)

Following hot on the heels of its successful showcase at the recent Taste of Cape Town Festival, Steenberg’s Bistro Sixteen82 will make its debut at the Good Food & Wine Show, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 26 to 29 May (2011).

Bistro Sixteen82 is one of only ten restaurants who have been invited to participate at the prized foodie platform this year. Renowned chef Heston Blumenthal, the owner of Britain’s 3-star Michelin Guide-rated restaurant, The Fat Duck – which had been named best restaurant in the world, is also making his first-ever public appearance in South Africa. He will be seen at the show’s Samsung Chefs in Action Theatre on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May.

Food enthusiasts may have a taste of some of bistro specialist Chef Brad Ball’s famed Tapas dishes taken from the popular restaurant menu. Available at R50 per serving, options will include succulent White Fish Ceviche served with corn chips and avocado; a Trinchado of seared beef sirloin steeped in red wine and garlic; mouth-watering Braised Pork Fideos with tomato and fennel seed atop a bed of Spanish pasta; and a sensational Paprika Calamari served with smoked paprika aioli. The Tapas may be enjoyed at the Bistro Sixteen82 stand with a glass of wine from Ball’s Steenberg recommendations, ranging from Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2010 to Steenberg Nebbiolo 2009 and Steenberg Shiraz 2009 (R30 per glass).

Since opening in November 2009, Bistro Sixteen82 has constantly raised the bar for stylish, informal dining in Cape Town. Serving breakfast, lunch and tapas, its menus are nothing short of a gastronomic symphony. Against a glorious vineyard setting, it boasts an ambience that embodies opulent chic – equally popular among the trendy ‘jetset’, the business brigade and families, for its inspired seasonal fare.

The Steenberg Winery, incorporating cellar door restaurant Bistro Sixteen82, won the Global Winner Wine Tourism Services in the Great Wine Capitals’ Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2011, also taking top honours in the South African region by winning two of the seven categories, namely Architecture, Parks and Gardens, and Wine Tourism Services.

THREE FANCOURT RESTAURANTS SERVE TEMPTING WINTER SPECIALS

Fancourt in George has announced that each of the three restaurants on the resort will be serving tempting winter menus this year, including special offers that will provide a gourmet feast with excellent value during the upcoming cooler months.

Located within the newly refurbished Manor House Boutique Hotel, Henry White’s, Fancourt’s classic, fine dining restaurant has introduced a gourmet crayfish dish that is available every Friday from 27 May, at only R129. Diners may indulge in a choice between freshly grilled, or Court Bouillon poached crayfish – served with hand cut pommes frites, homemade mayonnaise and crisp organic herb leaved salad tossed with black truffle dressing.

A superb destination for the whole family, Fancourt has brought back their popular family Sunday lunches, which are now served in the Morning Glory restaurant that overlooks the first tee of the golf course, boasting the best views of the Outeniqua mountains. Starting from 29 May with a different theme every week, Sunday family lunch can include either traditional carvery or spitbraai, or teppanyaki, an interesting style of Japanese cuisine which we know as ‘stirfry’ – at R125 per person. Children under the age of 10 eat for free, and will be entertained with various kiddies activities including a jumping castle.

Tuesday nights are ‘pasta nights’ at Fancourt, where diners may experience the authentic taste of Italy at La Cantina restaurant, enjoying as much freshly cooked pasta as you like, at only R70 per person and R45 per child under the age of 12. A variety of homemade Italian pasta dishes are prepared every Tuesday night by Milanese Chef, Matteo Siliberti, who loves sharing his penchant for simplicity and cuisine that bursts with flavour.

Situated across 613 hectares of lush countryside on the picturesque Garden Route, Fancourt was voted Africa’s Leading Golf Resort at the 2009 World Travel Awards. All Fancourt restaurants exude a warm, inviting ambience, with luxurious interiors complete with inspired artworks and open fireplaces, as well as a wood burning pizza oven in La Cantina. The magnificent views of the splendid gardens, golf courses and surrounding mountains complement this multi-sensory dining experience on the Garden Route.

SINGITA LAUNCHES TRUE MOBILE TENTED SAFARI EXPERIENCE

May 4, 2011

SINGITA LAUNCHES TRUE MOBILE TENTED SAFARI EXPERIENCE

Singita Game Reserves has launched Singita Explore, a transformational new travel concept that will take guests on a private mobile safari to some of Africa’s most remote and romantic wilderness sites. The new product has been custom designed to meet global trends and the demand from discerning travellers for ‘privacy, exclusivity and closeness to nature’. Singita Explore will be rolled out in East Africa on the first of June 2011 within the 340 000 acre (142 000ha) Singita Grumeti Reserves, situated along the Western corridor of Tanzania’s legendary Serengeti.

A completely exclusive, true ‘mobile’ camp, Singita Explore is a unique, modern safari experience unlike any other. Singita Explore puts the adventure back into ‘going on safari’, offering a journey of exploration on an exclusive-use basis for between 2 and 12 guests only. It is an ideal component of an East African safari itinerary within the Singita Grumeti Reserves, including stays at its three different lodges: Singita Faru Faru, Singita Sabora Tented Camp and flagship Singita Sasakwa, the only Relais & Châteaux property in East Africa.

Touching the earth lightly, everything about the mobile camp is designed for minimal energy consumption with little environmental impact. Guests will return from game drives to en-suite hideaways where canvas walls frame contemporary details infused with the durable textures of Africa. Designed by Cécile & Boyd’s around a theme that is modern, robust and stylish, with wholesome furnishings that are real, utilitarian and comfortable – in steel, leather, timber, rubber and natural fabrics, Singita Explore removes the clutter of everyday life with a safari that is both luxurious and uncomplicated.

Singita’s innovative signature style and dedication to conservation embodies the design and purpose of Singita Explore. Luke Bailes, CEO of Singita Game Reserves says privacy and exclusivity too are key signatures of the Singita Explore concept. ‘With Singita Explore we see the return of raw authenticity to days spent in the bush, and nights under canvas in the wilderness. Luxury is still there, but we’re doing it differently – comfortable and detailed, with the excess taken out, and yet, retaining the element of luxury to offer a very beautiful safari adventure experience. Singita Explore is back to basics, pure distilled Africa without modern-day distractions to guarantee closeness to wildlife and untouched landscapes.’

Unlike other camps, which are seasonal and semi-permanent, Singita Explore will be disassembled on demand, and moved to different locations in accordance to nature, its rainfall patterns, vegetation, and game movements that include the annual wildebeest migration – one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. The mobile safari camp will be fully staffed with a private guide and game viewing vehicle, chef and a camp host, with each itinerary individually tailored according to guests’ personal interests, and preferred safari activities.

Within Singita Grumeti Reserves, Singita Explore will also offer equestrian mobile tented safaris, providing an opportunity for horse lovers to spend their days riding on the open plains of the Serengeti, and the evenings gathered around the campfire, sharing stories and experiences. Equestrian group departures have been set for August, September and October 2011, to accommodate up to eight riders from different parts of the world, brought together by their love for riding and nature.

Elsewhere, the new Singita Explore brand may in future extend into some of the other pristine wilderness reserves where Singita holds exclusive concessions.
