STEENBERG VINEYARDS PARTNERS WITH ‘BAREFOOT NO MORE’ TO TURN FLIP-FLOPS INTO SCHOOL SHOES
Steenberg Vineyards has partnered with Barefoot No More, an initiative that drives a national school shoe campaign for children in need, in an innovative fundraising venture which will be conducted at the cellar door of the Constantia Valley winery over the festive season and thereafter. The novel sponsorship concept will afford visitors to the Steenberg Winery the chance to purchase a pair of designer ‘Steenberg 1682 Methode Cap Classique’ branded flip-flops – and with each purchase two pairs of new school shoes will be sponsored for underprivileged children.
The Barefoot No More sponsorship model is a simple one which allows companies to purchase and brand the ‘241’ flip-flops (‘get 2 pairs of school shoes – 4 – 1 pair of flip-flops’) with their logo and corporate colours, thereby creating a commercial platform to raise funds through creative sales and marketing strategies. Steenberg Vineyards has risen to the challenge, and has commissioned 500 pairs of pink flip-flops to be branded with their signature 1682 Cap Classique brand design, each beautifully adorned with a single string of Swarovski crystals running across the bands, making it somewhat of a collector’s piece. These will retail at the cellar door for R375 a pair, and will make the perfect Christmas gift or beach accessory. In addition, this endeavour will raise awareness for Barefoot No More, which creates on-going job opportunities for local shoe producers through its campaign.
Says Sales and Marketing Manager for Steenberg Vineyards, Anetha Homan: ‘This special venture is close to the hearts of our entire team – we live and work in a hugely privileged environment, and it feels great to be able to give something back! With education being the key to a brighter future for all, and children being the vectors of this future, we are excited about the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to one of the most important social issues facing our country. There are many children who overcome great hardship to receive an education, even if it means walking many miles with their bare feet to get to school. Through Barefoot No More, and with the wonderful support of our customers, we aim to provide in the region of 1000 pairs of shoes to enable at least some children to take those vital steps towards a better education, and eventually a better life.’
According to the earliest records, flip-flops first made their appearance over 6000 years ago, making them the oldest form of footwear. There are depictions of flip flops in ancient Egyptian murals on tombs and temples from about 4 000 BC and the oldest surviving examples of flip-flops or thongs, made from papyrus leaves 1 500 years BC, are on display in the British Museum in London. The modern flip-flop has evolved quite dramatically from the original Japanese Zori, and returned to the global platform in the 1940s in its current form, to claim its’ status as the ‘world’s most popular shoe’.
