May 6, 2013

La Cantina Interiors 05

Fancourt’s popular Italian-styled family restaurant La Cantina has teamed up with local wine experts to present Vino Mondays on their weekly events line-up, offering local and visiting food and wine enthusiasts the chance to get a taste of some of South Africa’s finest wines.

The complimentary tasting events showcase cultivars and varietals from different vineyards every week, to bring the Cape winelands to the Garden Route. Events take place in the restaurant between 18:00 and 19:00 and will be led by a local representative of each respective winery, who will share fascinating insight into the production and blending of their different varietals and vintages.

Vino Mondays will be popular with local and international visitors staying at the two Fancourt hotels, but will also appeal to wine and food aficionados from George and nearby towns who are keen to discover exciting new wines as a preamble to a delicious evening meal at their favourite family restaurant!

The May Vino Mondays programme kicks off on the 6th with a tempting Pongracz Sparkling Wine and Chocolate pairing presented by the Plaisir de Merle Wine Estate in the Paarl Winelands. On 13 May, it’s the turn of Anthonij Rupert Wines, a range lovingly crafted by winemaker Niel Bester on the historic L’Ormarins wine farm beneath the jagged peaks of the Groot Drakenstein Mountain in Franschhoek. De Grendel Wine Farm on the picturesque Durbanville Wine Route takes the spotlight on 20 May with a selection of their latest vintages, and rounding off the month of May on the 27th, is a tasting of the well-rounded Sauvignon Blancs and Bordeaux blends created by winemaker Bartho Eksteen at the Hermanuspietersfontein Wine Farm in Hermanus.

La Cantina has put together two more tasty Special Offers to warm up the winter months, available from May until the end of August. It’s definitely the place to be on Tuesdays when the Tuesday Rib Special, a tasty portion of Tuscan Style Spare Ribs served with crisp French fries and a fresh side salad is on offer at just R89. To rev up the weekends, the Friday night ‘Kidz Night’ Special offers two children under the age of 12 a taste of pizza heaven, with an order of their favourite pizza with up to three yummy toppings, at absolutely no charge between 18:00 and 22:30, when dining with two adults.

Chef de Cuisine Vito Fanizza is at the helm of the authentic, modern and elegant Italian dining experience offered at La Cantina. Raised in Italy, Fanizza’s approach is as fresh and inspired as the menus he conjures up, and he brings invaluable local and international experience to the table from previous appointments at Sun City’s Cascades and Palace Hotels; the Langeler Room at the San Lameer Golf Estate on the Kwa-zulu Natal South Coast; and Trattoria Del Pescatore in Leeds in the UK, to name a few. His team consistently dish up a delectable buffet breakfast and a la carte dinner menu in the relaxed and informal atmosphere that makes this venue perfect for interactive functions, including Vino Mondays. The dining experience strikes the perfect balance between tradition and innovation, and is complemented by special features that include a pizza counter where children may build their own pizzas, an outdoor dining area, as well as a private dining room for bigger families or groups. La Cantina serves breakfast from 06.30 to 10.30 and dinner from 18.00 to 22.30, seven days a week. Booking is essential.

FANCOURT LEADS THE WAY FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S FIRST PROFESSIONAL GOLFING LEARNERSHIP PROGRAM FOR CADDIES

March 14, 2013

FANCOURT Caddie Unathi Matshau

Fancourt will launch South Africa’s first accredited Professional Golfing Learnership Program for caddies on Friday 12 April 2013. Designed to provide caddies with an internationally recognised qualification that will open doors to a wide range of careers in the golf industry, the program is a partnership between Fancourt and the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sports Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA), in association with the South African Black Golfers Association (SABGA). Twenty six caddies – 19 of whom are based at Fancourt, and the remainder all Fancourt-accredited, will complete the two year pilot program by February 2015.

Fancourt was selected among the country’s leading golf destinations to present the pilot program because of its commitment to improving the skills of golf caddies on the Garden Route, where it is home to three of the country’s finest golf courses – The Links, Outeniqua and Montagu.

The Learnership Program aims to train 60 caddies over the two year period, and will be presented at selected venues in three provinces – the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.  According to CEO of CATHSSETA, Mike Tsotetsi, the National Diploma in Club Professional Golfing was developed to elevate the status of caddies and also to enable those that graduate to not only become highly rated teaching professionals, but also much better caddies, affording them huge scope to practice anywhere in the world. He says: ‘Many professional golfers have caddied at some point, and this qualification is set to bring a new generation of trained and professional black players into the game.’

Aside from hosting the official launch, Fancourt has made a generous investment in this program. It is providing all golfing facilities during the practicals for the pilot program, as well as the expertise of the Fancourt Golf Academy professionals, and the use of the state of the art Taylormade Fitment Centre. The Golf Academy’s trained Osteopath Olivia McKinlay will also perform a selective functional movement assessment (SFMA) to tailor-make each candidate’s swing.

Fancourt’s Human Resources Business Partner, Ajay Goosai, who manages the caddie team, is mentoring the candidates. ‘We are privileged to be chosen by CATHSSETA as a partner in this first-of-its-kind initiative, and are proud to provide students with access to arguably some of the best golf facilities in the world, during their practical training. We know that once this program has rolled out, our country will be well on the way to having the best caddies in the world’, he said.

He added that Fancourt has always been a part of the greater golfing community, and, as an industry leader, has taken on the responsibility of improving the lives and livelihoods of their own and South Africa’s caddie fraternity, which is currently one of the largest in the world.

One of Fancourt’s most popular caddies, talented 31-year old Unathi Matshau from Thembalethu township on the outskirts of George, was selected for the pilot program.  His ‘claim to fame’ is that he caddies for legendary golfer Gary Player when he is in town.  Once Matshau has completed his diploma, he will only need to meet two PGA requirements – a golf handicap of five and completing 3 000 notional hours, to be recommended for a post as a Pro Teacher – which will be the realization of one of his lifelong dreams.

FANCOURT SPA INTRODUCES ‘WATSU’ HYDROTHERAPY

February 22, 2013

Fancourt Roman Bath

Fancourt, South Africa’s top leisure and lifestyle destination on the Garden Route, offers a sophisticated spa and wellness experience, with its award winning Spa recently named a winner in the 2012 World Luxury Hotels Spa Awards. Integral to the holistic offering here are some of the most advanced healing spa therapies, with Watsu, one of the world’s leading hydro-therapy treatments, the most recent to be introduced here.

Watsu was developed as a form of aquatic bodywork by president of the Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association Harold Dull in 1980, and is a gentle form of body therapy performed in warm water that combines elements of massage, joint mobilisation, shiatsu, muscle stretching and dance.

At Fancourt, this specialized form of Aqua Therapy is performed in the ozonated Roman Bath adjacent to the spa, by on-site physiotherapist Verona Cronje. She is a WABA (Worldwide Aquatic Body Association) registered Watsu practitioner, one of only a handful in the country.

Her Watsu sessions are as popular with busy executives, as with visitors vacationing here. The therapy produces powerful anxiety and stress relieving effects, and assists with pain relief and effective digestion. Cronje credits Watsu therapy as a great healer, aided by the warm water that relaxes the muscles and supports the spine. Healing is further bolstered by the tranquil interiors of the spa where calming music and the subtle fragrance of Frangipani incense fills the air.

She also runs a twice weekly general strengthening Hydro class at the Fancourt Spa using mainly Halliwick (a swimming technique for people with physical disabilities) and Pilates principles. Her classes are attended by people recovering from injuries and surgery, as well as enthusiastic golfers that need more flexibility and strength to be able to keep doing what they love most at an optimum level. To enquire about Hydro classes at Fancourt contact Verona Cronje on 082 564 5558 or email vmcronje@falconprop.co.za

Verona Cronje holds a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Physiotherapy from the University of the Free State, and has over two decades of experience running her own practice. She is also certified as an International Advanced Aqua Therapist and is an expert in Aquatic Bodywork using therapy techniques such as Bad Ragaz, an aquatic version of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation that improves muscle function via patterns of movement. Having studied under the guidance of acclaimed Canadian physiotherapist and aquatic teacher, Peggy Shroedinger, she uses mainly Watsu, Cranio-Sacral Therapy and Dry Needling techniques (the use of solid filiform needles for relief of muscle pain and stubborn spasm), working directly with the body`s natural capacity for self-repair to treat a wide range of conditions.

The Fancourt Spa offers a world of pampering within 10 treatment rooms, among which a couple’s treatment room. All spa guests have complimentary access to a wide range of facilities that include the heated Roman bath and Jacuzzi with relaxation area; sauna and steam rooms with male and female change rooms and showers; and a tepidarium (heated room).

FANCOURT PARTNERS WITH SIKELELA SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE TO CREATE FUN-FILLED KIDS RANGE

December 13, 2012

Marki Toto at Sikelela with Fancourt Kidz Range

Fancourt’s longstanding partnership with the George Child and Family Welfare’s Sikelela Skills Development Centre provides unemployed people with the opportunity to earn a living, while harnessing their creativity. Most recently, the ladies at the centre have been commissioned to create items for the new Fancourt Kids range, the latest expansion of its popular Kidz Club concept. Intricate and fun designs can be seen brightening up everything from towels, facecloths and linen, to room-drops and turndown gifts in the hotel rooms, with special attention to baby items such as comforters, fitted sheets and pillowcases for cots. These, along with kids apparel that include tiny slippers, bibs and booties, have all been designed to welcome children visiting the resort into the ’Fancourt Kidz Family’ and to add a touch of magic to their stay. The items may also be purchased as keepsakes to take home to treasure in years to come.

Known as a family-friendly destination, Fancourt places great score on providing children with an unforgettable stay, starting on arrival with the presentation of their own personalized Activity Book, with bright and accessible visuals depicting kids enjoying activities on offer at Fancourt and other prime tourism attractions on the Garden Route. A range of special facilities for children bring a happy smile to their faces, not least of these being the exciting Kidz Club area at the new Sports and Leisure Centre, where an indoor jungle gym, dolls house, and an arts and crafts station provide many happy hours of play.

Golf for kids is a popular pursuit at Fancourt, and the Fancourt Golf Academy recently introduced a programme especially for youngsters, headed up by junior golf specialist Robbie Scott, focussing on the specific stage of development of each child, from the age of six upwards. Designed to develop the potential of budding young golfers, the Junior Programme in particular benefits from the expertise and experience of on-site Osteopath Olivia McKinlay, who performs a Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) to establish any physical barriers that may affect a young player’s swing.  This is then addressed in the individualized training programme, with much success.

In 2006 the Sikelela Skills Development Centre was established by the Fancourt Foundation, now the Sabine Plattner Africa Charities (SPAC), under the leadership of Fancourt owners Hasso and Sabine Plattner. It was essentially created to provide arts and crafts training to unemployed members of the community to enable them to earn a living and support themselves.  To date it has provided skills training for more than 200 people, ranging from knitting, sewing, glasswork and beading, to building bird feeders and making glass chandeliers from champagne bottles recycled after a Fancourt Ball, some of which have even been exported.  Fancourt recycles various other goods to Sikelela, which George Child and Family Welfare adds to their Resource Centre and Toy Library, by using the recycled material to make toys for the smaller crèches in the area.  The project was given a huge boost when participants were commissioned to produce a large amount of the décor for the 2008 Fancourt Ball.

Fancourt is known for its efforts to uplift disadvantaged communities in the Southern Cape, through various successful, long-term community outreach projects.  These include five Nutritional Centres that feed 700 adults and children, five days a week.

Kerrin Titmas, Fancourt CEO says she believes the partnership between Fancourt and George Child and Family Welfare with regard to the Sikelela Skills Development Centre, is a real success story, based on a very practical collaboration. ‘We are proud of our association with each of these groups, and of what we have achieved for the community, together.  It’s a relationship that adds real value to the Fancourt guest experience, while benefitting the lives of many people from the communities we serve.’

Produced by, and with all proceeds to George Child and Family Welfare’s Sikelela Skills Development Centre, this project offers unemployed people the opportunity to earn a living while harnessing their creativity.

Fancourt’s superb chefs have designed three distinctive, traditional Christmas Day dining experiences, to be shared with loved ones, family and friends on Tuesday 25 December. At La Cantina restaurant an Italian-inspired buffet will be served at R350 per person (R210 per child under 12), while for those who prefer an unsurpassed classic dining experience, a traditional English set menu awaits at Henry White’s, at R480 per person. Also available on Christmas Day is a traditional Christmas lunch buffet in the Ballroom at R390 per person (R235 per child under 12 years). Christmas lunch will be served between 12:30 and 15:00 at each venue.

On Sunday 23 December a Family Outdoor Concert with The Parlotones will take place on the lawns at Bramble Hill – one of their last performances for a local audience before they head for the USA. SA’s top band Prime Circle will take to the stage here on Saturday 29 December. The band is set to rock the socks off concertgoers with renditions of songs from their latest album due for release in November, including their epic new single, Time Kills Us All.

Concertgoers are welcome to bring their own picnic blankets, and eats will be available for sale from various food stalls, while beverages will be sold at the beer garden (no alcohol may be brought onto the premises). Gates will open at 14:00, with tickets selling at R165 for adults, while children under the age of 10 enter for free. Bookings: Computicket.

Guests may celebrate the New Year in style at Fancourt on Monday 31 December. Festivities start at the Porte Corchere at 20:00 with a delicious welcome drink, then move on to the Clubhouse Terrace where a sumptuous dinner spread awaits, along with live entertainment to set the mood. Guests may countdown the New Year either at the Club Lounge or in the Ballroom where a DJ will spin the tunes. A ‘Sweet Spot’, presenting a variety of assorted cakes, chocolate dipped strawberries, super-sized cookies and more, will be available at both venues. Tickets are R1000 per person, all-inclusive of dinner, wine, local beer and soft drinks. Entry is R500 for children under 18, while those under seven years enter for free.

Fancourt was recently singled out among the world’s 10 Best Golf Resorts on CNNGO, the online travel hub of CNN, for its world-class hospitality and golf offering, and over the December holidays visitors may wish to take advantage of their excellent value Family Escape Package. This includes luxury accommodation at the Fancourt Hotel, for 2 adults sharing with up to 2 children (12 years and younger), plus full English breakfast included daily, as well as complimentary use of the Kidz Club facilities and participation in the Kidz and Teen Summer Holiday Programme. Families will enjoy access to a full range of resort facilities, including those at the new Sports and Leisure Centre, and, with a bouquet of special treats thrown in for good measure, it’s a great offer at R1999 per room per night. Valid until 31 December 2012 and available only to SA residents

FANCOURT PRESENTS A CONCERT-ON-THE LAWN WITH LEGENDARY SOUTH AFRICAN MUSICIAN JOHNNY CLEGG

October 12, 2012

Fancourt in George kicks off the festive season early this year with an outdoor concert on the lawns with one of South Africa’s finest musical legends, Johnny Clegg on Saturday, 3 November. The concert starts at 16:30 and is sure to be one of the most popular music events offered on the Garden Route this summer, performed in the picturesque setting of Bramble Hill at this leading leisure destination.

Johnny Clegg is a music icon and one of the country’s outstanding musical ambassadors, who regularly plays to audiences across the globe at sold out venues. There are few South Africans who haven’t danced or sung along to his string of hit songs that include ‘Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World’, ‘Scatterlings of Africa’, ‘Impi’, ‘Great Heart’ and ‘African Sky Blue’. A dancer, anthropologist, singer, songwriter, academic, activist and French knight, he is one of our most passionate cultural ‘exports’ and has been instrumental in putting the ‘new’ South Africa on the map. Visitors can look forward to his signature electric stage performance backed by an energetic backing band, in a setting that is simply spectacular.

Concertgoers may bring along their own picnic blankets and deck chairs to enjoy the concert in comfort. For their convenience various food stalls and a beer garden will be available. Please note that no alcohol may be allowed to be brought onto the premises. Gates will open at 14:00, with the concert starting at 16:30. Tickets are available through Computicket at R161 for adults and R80 for children under 13, while children between 0 and 5 years enter free.

Fancourt will offer an exciting programme of family activities and entertainment, over the festive season, featuring more of South Africa’s top musical acts. For more information visit http://www.fancourt.co.za
