NEW YEAR DETOX AT THE TWELVE APOSTLES HOTEL AND SPA

February 20, 2014

12A Spa Rasul 002 S

12A Spa 011 S

Summer is in full swing – only hampered by the fact that the festive season tends to leave its marks, usually in the shape of sluggish skin, a tired metabolism and a few pounds too many. Hitting the gym helps of course, but for those who need a quick detox to be beach-ready in a flash, the award-winning Spa at The Twelve Apostles Hotel offers the perfect one-stop solution.

Says newly appointed Spa Manager Joanne de Wet: ‘Our body is a temple – but treating it as such is not always easy. Poor eating habits, stress, pent up emotions, too much sugar, salt, caffeine, lack of sleep and environmental influences all play havoc with our internal system, leading to disrupted PH levels, bloating, constipation, a sluggish metabolism and tiredness. The only effective way to combat these symptoms is to eliminate the causes, which works by detoxifying the body by exercising, daily skin brushing, drinking enough water and following a healthy diet. In addition, a proper detox several times a year is considered to be a healthy wake-up call for the body. To kick-start your detox, book yourself into The Spa at The Twelve Apostles for one – or several – of our recommended treatments!’

Start off your detox with a Traditional Arabic Rasul (30min/R250, 60min/R500), a relaxing skin-smoothing self-treatment which blends mineral rich mud, steam and heat to provide an experience that cleanses, releases toxins and rejuvenates. The self-applied mud hardens in dry heat, allowing the skin to draw out impurities from the body. As the mud softens again, its beneficial ingredients and natural minerals are then further absorbed by the body.

A B|Africa Herbal Salt or Sugar Full Body Exfoliation (30min/R 365) invigorates the skin by eliminating excess surface skin cells, leaving it soft, nourished and ready to absorb nutrients. B|Africa is the exclusive signature range of products and treatments of all Red Carnation Hotel Collection South Africa Spas. Inspired by nature and named in honour of the founder and president of Red Carnation, Bea Tollman, the B|Africa products combine indigenous African plant extracts with natural resources of the sea.

The Elemis Aroma Spa Ocean Wrap: Cellulite Detox Wrap (75 min/R790) meanwhile is a veritable power cocktail for the body – a combination of seaweed and essential oils in a detoxifying wrap that eliminates toxins, reduces fluid retention, re-mineralises the skin and improves blood circulation.

This streamlining wrap can be followed with a Lymph Drainage Massage (60min/R760) to boost the immune system, clear blockages, remove toxins, transport nutrients and increase blood flow and metabolism – all via a gentle, rhythmic, pumping and stretching massage in which the therapist controls the flow of lymph within the body. The movements direct the lymph fluid to the lymph nodes, where it is filtered and waste is removed.

Alternatively, sea fans might want to consider the Twelve Apostles’ Absolute Beachfront Hot Lava Shell Massage (60 min/R900, 90min/R1050). This complete massage journey uses hands, arms and elbows and incorporates the self-heating technology of the Tiger Shell to allow a deeper massage all the way to the core of the muscle. The shells heat up and give off calcium ions when activated by natural ingredients, resulting in renewed, firmer skin with a healthy glow.

For those seeking last-minute results, nothing beats the Elemis Body Sculpting Cellulite and Colon Therapy (60min/R760) to redefine and smooth the silhouette. Elemis’ clinically proven Body Sculpting System is combined with a detoxifying birch and fennel peel-off mask and specialist abdominal, hip and thigh drainage massage techniques, to help with colon cleansing, smooth the appearance of cellulite, boost circulation and reduce fluid retention.

Another emergency treatment is The Spa’s Ionithermie Super Detox Slimming (60min/R790), a secret weapon in the fight of the dreaded orange peel effect. Known as Europe’s leading 5-in-1 body and figure corrective treatment, this body blitz works by introducing active ingredients into problem areas, resulting in a visible reduction in cellulite and firmed and toned skin. In addition it detoxifies and re-mineralises the body, reduces fluid retention, improves blood and lymph circulation, and raises energy levels – making it the perfect kick-start to a detox.

Last but not least, for a continued at-home detox and maintenance Joanne recommends The Spa’s B|Africa Eucalyptus and Black Pepper Body Balm (50ml/R145, 125ml/R255), a natural, botanical synergy of Shea and Mafura butter infused with Eucalyptus, Black Pepper and Marjoram for a warming effect and to aid poor circulation: ‘Warm a small amount of the balm in the palms of your hands, then gently apply a thin layer and massage using upward circular movements.’

GRAHAM BECK CELLAR MASTER ERIKA OBERMEYER TO HOST WOMEN’S MONTH FOOD & WINE PAIRING DINNER AT THE TWELVE APOSTLES HOTEL AND SPA ON 30 AUGUST 2013

August 13, 2013

Erika_Obermeyer Graham Beck
12A Azure Restaurant

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa will see out Women’s Month 2013 with a special Food & Wine Pairing Dinner in Azure Restaurant on Friday 30 August, co-hosted by Graham Beck Cellar Master Erika Obermeyer and Azure’s Executive Sous Chef Christo Pretorius. Obermeyer says she is delighted to be the first female host of Azure’s monthly Food & Wine Pairing series.

The collaboration with The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa will give Obermeyer a chance to introduce Graham Beck’s new The Game Reserve range to a discerning audience of both international hotel guests and local epicureans. The new range represents the culmination of Graham Beck’s conservation efforts and pioneering approach to farming in harmony with nature, demonstrating the exceptional progress the vineyard has made in sustainable viticulture and wine production. The Twelve Apostles Hotel’s location is in perfect synergy with this philosophy – situated on Cape Town’s most scenic route, it is poised above the Atlantic Ocean and flanked by the Twelve Apostles mountain range and majestic Table Mountain National Park, a World Heritage Site which recently gained New7Wonders of Nature status.

Each of the Graham Beck Game Reserve cultivars feature one of the many indigenous animals and plants found in the Graham Beck Private Nature Reserve on the Robertson Estate. Every wine in the range therefore tells a unique and compelling story, celebrating the splendid natural diversity of this remarkable, yet intensely fragile region.

Obermeyer will welcome guests at the event with a glass of chilled Graham Beck MCC, before settling in to enjoy the decadent four-course menu. Executive Sous Chef Christo Pretorius will first serve Franschhoek Cured Salmon Trout with cured passion fruit, ceviche, asparagus and lemon grass, paired with Graham Beck’s The Game Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2012. This is to be followed by Quail Curry with confit leg, spiced breast, lentil todka, compressed cucumber and cumin yoghurt, which Obermeyer matches with Graham Beck’s Bowed Head Chenin Blanc 2011. The main course of Lamb Loin, Moroccan empanada, harrisa, charred aubergine, cumin, baby carrots, pistachio shortbread and minted jus will be beautifully enhanced by the Graham Beck Game Reserve Shiraz 2010. Dinner concludes with a sweet flourish, thanks to Chef Pretorius’ Chocolate Tres Leches with chocolate mousse, forest berries and sable chocolate crumbs. Graham Beck’s Coffeestone Cabernet 2011 presents the perfect accompaniment to this last course, before Petits Fours are served with tea and coffee.

Having joined Graham Beck in 2005, Obermeyer says her objective is a wine style that is earthy yet elegant, brimming with finesse and beautiful fruit, and rounded off with an appealing mid-palate. ‘My winemaking style is to really capture the essence of the vineyard in the bottle. In our wines, we’ve got the best of both worlds – Old World elegance combined with the up-front fruit from the New World sunshine.’

THE RED CARNATION HOTEL COLLECTION SOUTH AFRICA TAKES THE HONOURS ONCE AGAIN AT THE DINERS CLUB WINELIST AWARDS

August 7, 2013

OYSTERboxGRILLroomFESTIVEtableBK dook 00212A Azure Restaurant

The Red Carnation Hotel Collection South Africa’s three properties – The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa in Cape Town; Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat in the Cederberg Mountains; and The Oyster Box in Umhlanga, have all won the highest accolade, the Diamond Award, in the prestigious 2013 Diners Club Winelist Awards which were announced recently.

Bushmans Kloof has received this accolade no less than nine times, while this year marks the sixth Diamond Award for The Twelve Apostles Hotel, and the fourth consecutive year for The Oyster Box, which opened in 2009.

This year’s prominent judging panel was chaired by veteran wine critic and author Dave Hughes and comprised MasterChef South Africa judge and Executive Chef of the Monde Vino restaurant Benny Masekwameng; Rossouw’s Restaurants author JP Rossouw; co-owner of Winestyle.biz, Nikki Dumas; leading wine critics, Christine Rudman and Fiona McDonald; and the head of the Cape Wine Academy, Marilyn Cooper. The judges’ task was to select wine lists that were interesting, varied and original, easy to use, informative, accurate and well matched to the cuisine of the house. The winning wine lists also had to reflect trends in still, sparkling and fortified wines and grape-based spirits. The panel further evaluated balance, pairing ability and list presentation. To be awarded Diamond status, wine lists had to achieve an impressive score of over 91%.

The Red Carnation Hotel Collection takes a dedicated, passionate approach to its food and wine offering in order to create a truly memorable and authentic dining experience. The carefully selected wine lists at The Twelve Apostles, Bushmans Kloof and The Oyster Box feature a perfectly balanced selection of iconic South African mainstays and new trailblazers, as well international offerings, special vintages and rare-auction wines.

The Twelve Apostles’ winning wine list was compiled by Head Sommelier Gregory Mutambe, one of South Africa’s rising stars in the wine world. Mutambe’s list of 219 wines reflects the latest South African and international trends, specially selected to complement the elegant international cuisine and local flavours presented at its Azure Restaurant.

Augmenting Bushmans Kloof’s superb wine list, selected by F&B Manager Michel Bouic, together with Wine Concepts, is a menu bursting with fresh Cape Contemporary Cuisine that features selected home grown produce from the lodge’s organic gardens. Signature dishes proudly showcase the regional cuisine, their flavours further enhanced by 212 local and international wines.

The Oyster Box’s 248-strong wine list comprises a selection of both Old World style and the more robust New World wines. It features an extensive choice of local and international vintages enjoyed in its fine dining restaurants by discerning guests from around the world.

THE TWELVE APOSTLES HOTEL AND SPA WELCOMES CHAMONIX WINES FOR A SPECIAL FOOD & WINE PAIRING EVENING AT AZURE RESTAURANT

July 3, 2013

12A Azure 024 S

On Friday 26 July 2013 The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa will be hosting its popular monthly Food & Wine Pairing Dinner in Azure Restaurant, this time in association with Franschhoek’s Chamonix Wines. Acting Executive Chef Christo Pretorius and his team will be joining forces with winemaker Gottfried Mocke from Chamonix Wines to present a mouth-watering four-course menu.

Boasting some of the highest planted vines in the Cape Winelands, Chamonix is blessed with cool breezes during the hot summer months and stony, clay-rich soil. Winemaker Gottfried Mocke believes in the power of minimal intervention and environmentally conscious farming methods, working hand-in-hand with nature. The wine farm offers a seamless blend of unspoiled nature, welcoming hospitality and a host of culinary and viticultural delights, which Mocke looks forward to showcasing at Azure.

Chef Pretorius will start the evening with Scallops, presented with king oyster, pickled shimeji, almond shortbread and citrus gel. Gottfried Mocke pairs this light seafood starter with his Chamonix White Reserve 2012. This is followed by Smoked quail with toasted pearl barley risotto, peas, raisins, ginger and quail jus, matched with Chamonix Chardonnay Reserve 2012. For the third course Chef Pretorius has chosen Lamb loin, served with confit belly, chick pea, butternut, rhubarb and peppercorn jus. Chamonix Pinot Noir 2012 offers the perfect accompaniment to this hearty winter dish. The final course is another savoury delight – Slow cooked beef brisket with pommes Dauphine, carrot, vanilla, black cherry and juniper jus, beautifully presented with Chamonix Troika 2011. For a sweet touch, Petits Fours will be served with tea and coffee.
